This year has seen a significant proportion of office workers shift to a more flexible working routine and for many of us that means spending more time working from home.

One of the downsides of working at home, or even in some city centre locations, is the difficulties that many workers can have in getting out into the open air. This might be just going for a walk to clear your head, or perhaps to meet with friends or colleagues to enjoy outdoor spaces either socially or in a professional capacity.

One benefit for employees working at Quorum Park is the ability to get outside and make use of our many outdoor spaces during work time and in lunch breaks.

Not only do we have outside seating areas, outdoor games, pool bikes and footpaths but we also have our own sports club, the perfect venue for a game of tennis to break up the day.

There is also a wildlife corridor running through the centre of the park and 500 trees line the Avenue. 

We have a variety of flora and fauna including, apple trees, birds, animals, insects and rabbits. Quorum’s Wildlife Group meets regularly to carry out activities to attract wildlife across the park and we have our very own Quorum honey bees!

  1. Boost your Concentration Levels recent studies have suggested that spending time outdoors can lead to increased focus and improved problem solving abilities. These benefits can have a dramatic impact employee engagement, retention, and productivity.

A study from the University of Utah found that participants solved an average of 47 percent more puzzles after completing a walk than participants who did not go on a walk. While taking a hike in the middle of our workday might not be the most practical option for some, there is evidence that merely walking at a normal, comfortable pace, can help open up the creative pathways in our brains.

  • Unleash your Creativityanother benefit of being outdoors is improved creativity. Researchers at Stanford University completed a study on the effects of walking for problem solving and idea generation. Study participants who walked on a treadmill indoors experienced a 60 percent increase in creative output. Once the outdoors was factored into the experiment, creative output soared. Of all the variables tested, walking outside “produced the most novel and highest quality” ideas – 81 percent of participants experienced enhanced creative thinking.
  • Health and WellbeingPerhaps most importantly, getting outdoors can lead to increased employee happiness, engagement and retention.

According to a 2018 survey workers between the ages of 22 and 65 spend approximately 95% of their time indoors.

  • 87% identified as a person who enjoys the outdoors.
  • 86% of respondents would like to spend more work hours outdoors.
  • 74% said it would improve their moods.
  • 71% anticipated reduced stress as a potential benefit.
  • 66% experienced an increase to their health & wellness.

The more we explore the benefits of spending some of our work hours outdoors, the more we appreciate the benefits on our productivity, focus, creativity and even improved health and wellbeing.
