Drive straight through the Tyne Tunnels from November 2021

Quicker, greener journey’s using the Tyne Tunnel are soon to become a reality as the new Tyne Pass barrierless scheme comes into effect later this Autumn.
The modern scheme will see the barriers removed from the tunnel as it moves to ‘open road tolling’ – a major development which is set to significantly reduce carbon emissions, speed up journey times and create up to 80 new local jobs.
The current outdated system requires customers to stop and make payment at the barriers, causing delay for drivers and resulting in excess carbon emissions from traffic. When Tyne Pass comes into operation, tunnel users will drive through without stopping and will pay the toll before or after their journey.
This is change for drivers who must learn to pay the toll in advance or by midnight the day after their journey. The toll can be paid using a pre-paid account (which includes a 10% discount per journey), online on the tunnels website or via the Tyne Tunnels app, by telephone or in person using cash at a Paypoint.
The exciting update means:
- No more queuing
- No more searching for change
- Reduced CO2 Emissions
- Reduced pollution in the area
You can pre-pay for your journey or pay by midnight the day after. The easiest way to pay is with a Tyne Tunnels account where you can use Auto-top up so you always have credit. Free sign up and save 10% on every journey.
You can also pay:
- Online at www.tt2.co.uk
- By automated phone line on 0191 5740030
- At dedicated PayPoint retailers across the region (cash and card)
- You can find out more about continuing your exemption pass by visiting www.tynepass.co.uk.
